A request for all your Mayor hopefuls

Dear Future Mayor of Chicago,

You have the power to use social media in a way to organize your campaign, but also the issues at hand for citizens of Chicago.

Thank you for reaching out to me to 'like' you on Facebook. If I 'like' you, what does this mean?

  • Will I get some special invite to a town hall you are having?
  • Perhaps liking your page will make me eligible to meet you one on one?
  • Will you talk back to me when I make a comment on your page?
  • How about giving a shout out to volunteers by highlighting their work via video?
  • Maybe you can work with Voter Registration and make sure I can vote after liking your page.

Other ideas
  • Ever thought about having a weekly 'address' to tell me how the campaign is progressing?
  • You may want to have a forum on YouTube that enables me to ask you questions, like YouTube Moderate
  • For those citizens that don't use YouTube or Facebook, have you considered looking up the churches and neighborhood spots that do?
  • Most folks have a mobile phone, can I text in the issues I have?
  • Do you have an app for your campaign? You may not need one, but it could be interesting? Don't forget to develop the app for iPhone, Blackberry and Android.  I'm sure you can contact Google here in Chicago and see if some of their Data Liberation folks would like to assist?
  • Can I tweet in questions? Will you respond?
  • How about tweeting your location for a surprise in-city town hall?

Feel free to ping me for other odds and ends.

Signed,
That gal with the odd name that cringes every time you ask me to 'like' you.

Why A Name is a Big Deal

A_name_is_a_name

When I was in kindergarten, my mother started telling people that in order to say my name, think of 'pizza'. That's where Blagica Pizza came from. I continue to laugh about that story, but I don't laugh about a large issue in a small place that is highlighted by a man from Iceland.

It is with great pleasure that I invite ALL of you to join me at the Spertus Institute on November 12 to watch a screening of 'A Name is a Name'.  The film is all about people trying to defend one simple thing - their name.  Told by a fella from his motorcycle, the film travels across the country of Macedonia, intersecting with people from all walks of life.  Each person tells their own story. "A Name is a Name" was screened in Washington D.C. and recently, Detroit. I am excited beyond words that it's coming to Chicago on November 12. Thank you to the Spertus Institute for hosting. Tickets here.

I hope to see you! Perhaps you'll get another look into what makes me tick and why I'm so passionate about being a village girl at heart.

40 Women to Watch in Social Media - Including Me?

A heads-up email from Lucretia Pruitt last night clued me into a list my name appeared on: Social Media 40: Women to Watch in 2011.  I was surprised to see so many new faces of women that have something to say, using various social media outlets to do so. Though I historically am not a fan of such lists, I am a fan of discovering new people, insights and stories behind what makes us connected using the interwebs.

Thank you, Scott Bryant for including me on the roster.
