The iPad:A Device for Your Parents + A Play on Words

Ipad_pic

Today's unveiling of the iPad, base priced at $499, looks to please many consumers. Not an iPhone, yet not quite a laptop, the iPad (I'm not too keen on the name) puts a myriad of tools into the hands of both tech geeks, but moreso, people like my parents. That's right, my parents. The iPad is a slimmed down version of a device that takes care of those basic features my parents want in a transportable device: email, web browsing, picture viewing and music streaming. Now a competitor to the Kindle, Apple's iBook application and store is seamlessly integrated in the iPad.  What IS missing is a built-in camera, though I'm wondering if the USB can continue to be used for a stand-alone web cam. The iPad also feels less like a 'computer' and more like a handy gadget that would sit on a coffee table like a remote control. Another good call by Apple's part, especially for those women who don't like to try new technology, ala a recent version of ABC's, "Modern Family".

On an unrelated technical note, Twitter and other places on the web are questioning Apple's choice of the name, 'iPad'. Women, including myself, couldn't help but to begin wondering what jokes will begin to surface. "iTampon"  is currently the #2 trending topic on Twitter and this old Mad TV sketch has resurfaced (I won't embed the actual video here, but it's quite comical).

Chatting with Marquette Students About the Web (Video)

Marquette.mov (1 KB)

I was going through old files and came across this video Professor Terence Ow of Marquette University filmed. I was a guest speaker at Marquette University, chatting about the transition of Web 1.0 to Web 2.0. Circa November 2008 and right before I joined Edelman Digital.

It's amazing to see what I discussed back then and how times have changed in over a year. Testament to how fast the web changes.

I think I may go back to the short hair!

A Video That Left Me Speechless

</object>

This eight minute video speaks for itself. An artist in the Ukraine uses sand, a light box and music to depict the occupation of the Ukraine during World War II.

Video left me in awe, not just for its historic reference, but for the reminder that telling a story needn't the tech tools we drool over today.

Sand. Light. Music.

A Laptop, an iPhone AND a Tablet? I'm Not Sold - Yet.

As much as I love my Apple products and stand by the belief that they've made my life more efficient, I'm not 100% sold on the tablet - yet. With a potential cost of a cool $1,000, the tablet aims to change the way households stay connected - from checking email to getting news to keeping up with classroom homework. What does intrigue me, however, are the current discussions Apple is having with mainstream media - newspapers, TV executives, etc.

There continues to be speculation about what the tablet will do, what it will look like, etc. What IS certain, however, is that Apple understands the need to have a revenue stream from 'old media' to make this 'new media' work seamlessly with consumers. This partnership reminds me of what Seesmsic is doing with their new Look technology - aka Twitter for everyone else.

Would You Pay to Watch Your Favorite Video Blogger?

Picture_1

Ustream just announced its pay-per-view service (Dane Cook will be first up to bat), enabling high profile celebs to live stream concerts, events, etc for a fee. Justin.TV's been doing this for a while, so it's no surprise that Ustream is coming on board.

Which makes me think: will this biz model trickle down to some of the more highly trafficked video bloggers? If you are a video blogger and/or would like to be a video blogger, I recommend clinching your Ustream user name now.

Seesmic Look: The Updated Portal?

Interesting news out of NYC today. Seesmic launched its new Windows-based tool, Seesmic Look. Designed to work with Twitter (and happens to have a Twitter-approved seal to boot), Look looks to me like an enhanced and suped-up portal page from the 90s.

The pre-determined Twitter lists (based on various interests and themes) are reminiscent of the portal categories from AOL, Yahoo, MSN, Altavista, Excite, etc. Consumers that aren't heavy Twitter users can still have the experience of Twitter, but in a more efficient way. Brands also jumped on board, enabling Seesmic to use those marketing dollars to make brand oriented Look pages. Smart.

Another interesting development: Seesmic is looking to install this application on PCs at purchase, but is yet to determine who the manufacturer will be.
