See You in Detroit

I'm off to Detroit tomorrow morning, where I will be participating in the two-day Future Midwest conference. If you think technology and digital media doesn't exist in and around Detroit, you're wrong.

Mission of the conference:

"FutureMidwest is the region’s largest two-day technology and knowledge conference taking place in Royal Oak, Mich. April 16 – 17, 2010. Founded by Adrian Pittman, Jordan Wolfe and Zach Lipson, FutureMidwest is the fusion of two successful conferences held in Michigan in 2009 – the Module Midwest Digital Conference and TechNow.

Both conferences highlighted how technology and digital tools have dramatically changed the way we do business and the effect this transition has had on companies. FutureMidwest kicks things up a notch with presentations, group breakout sessions, relationship-building opportunities and influencers who are taking action to redefine business in the digital age"

My chat will be on how community can be built one blog at a time. Other presenters include Scotty Monty, Beth Harte, Ken Burbary, Jay Adelson and Chris Barger.  As a pure bred metro Detroiter, it's fantastic to see such a conference hit Motown - and I hope it fosters some new ideas to get entrepreneurs excited to create.

See you in Detroit - and save me a Hani!

Coming to the South Loop: A Coffee Shop That's About the Community. Cool Concept, Huh?

You don't see this everyday. A neighbor and friend tipped me off to a fabulous concept. A husband and wife team are in the works of opening a coffee bar in the South Loop that is all about community building AND connecting us with folks around the world.

Spearheaded by the Neelys, Overflow Coffee Bar has a simple mission.

Overflow Coffee Bar is more than a typical coffee shop. For starters, we give our profits back into the community for non-profit activities. Next, we have a mission that’s more than just selling coffee. Our mission is to give South Loop residents, students and workers the opportunity to change the world. We accomplish our mission through four priorities.

Check out this video, shedding more light into the goal of the shop. I highlight the testament: how many of your neighbors do you really know - especially when you live in a vertical subdivision that is a condo building.

Gamechanger: iPhone App, Line2, Provides Potential Relief for AT&T Users

Wow.

Just finished reading Pogue's piece on the new technology from Toktumi, enabling iPhone users to have another phone line. Why is this so key? Phone calls can be made via WiFi signal, since many AT&T users (including yours truly) struggle with making phone calls in many indoor locations.  The second phone line acts very much like a second phone, complete with your contacts, new phone number and the ability to set up various voicemail boxes.

I plan on testing this out soon.

Social Media Internship Opportunity: Quinn for Illinois Gubernatorial Campaign

(This post is not an endorsement for Mr. Quinn. I'm just spreading the social media job news)

I just received word that the Quinn for Governor camp are looking for a social media intern. Is this you? If so, here are the details:

###

New/Social Media Internship:

The new media intern will report directly to the campaign’s communicators director, who is responsible for all media and messaging activities. This intern will be responsible for assisting in the management of all social media.  This will include maintaining the website, refining and updating the Facebook and Twitter sites, executing email blasts and looking for new opportunities to get the campaign’s message out.

This internship is unpaid; however, we are willing to work with your university to allow this to be for-credit based off any requirements.  We are asking for a minimum of 10 hours a week.  In a perfect world, we are looking for someone who could work 25+ hours a week; however, we completely understand the demands of college class schedules.

As part of the application we are asking for 4 items:

1)     A short cover letter outlining any relevant experience as well as your desire

2)     A resume detailing your experience and education

3)     Information regarding when you would be able to start, when you anticipating finishing, and an ideal weekly schedule for you.

4)     Two references (at least one must be college- or work-related)

Interested candidates can submit documents and/or contact Neil:
nkhare at gmail dot com or 913.908.4844.

Google: If You Don't Want Us to Track You, No Problem

I'm curious to see how this will shake out.

Soon, online citizens will be able to opt out of being tracked by Google Analytics. The impact could be quite large if enough online users decide to opt out, however, this reminds me of the cookie disabling feature - many people didn't disable their tracking cookies. Online advertising was affected, but not too much.
